In addition to meeting legislative requirements and appealing to consumers, reducing waste helps organizations save money. The restaurant industry spends an estimated $162 billion each year on costs related to wasted food, according to Recycle Track Systems.
Improving waste management is just one way to make hospitality more environmentally friendly. Here are seven other strategies:
1. USE SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
Using biodegradable or compostable packaging and tableware helps keep packaging out of landfills. The materials break down more quickly, reducing the amount of waste. By contrast, single-use plastics are not good for the environment because they are not reusable. Such products include plastic straws, which are used only once, then discarded.
“The era of single-use plastics and excessive packaging waste is gradually giving way to a new paradigm: sustainable packaging,” according to a Forbes article.
Growing demand for compostable packaging is boosting the biodegradable market, which is expected to grow from $448.2 billion in 2022 to $809.9 billion in 2032, according to Future Market Insights. The company also says that biodegradable packaging made up about 45% of the global packaging market in 2021.
2. REDUCE ENERGY AND WATER USAGE
There are many ways for hospitality organizations to consume less energy and water. Even small savings can add up month over month to make a notable difference. Proven ways to lower consumption include installing timers or motion detectors to ensure lights are only on when needed. Switching to energy-efficient bulbs will also reduce energy usage because they require less than traditional incandescent light bulbs.
Similarly, smart thermostats control heating and cooling to automatically maintain ideal temperatures, which can vary at different times of the day. In kitchens, hands-free faucets use sensors to turn on the water only when it’s needed and have automatic shutoffs to reduce waste. Likewise, water-saving plumbing devices, like low-flow showerheads in hotels, reduce water usage.
Hospitality companies can also ask customers to contribute to sustainability efforts. For example, hotels can encourage guests to reuse towels and bed linens to get more usage between washings.
